HS FOOTBALL: Safety tips for severe weather

Earlier today, we put out the notice that you needed to pay attention to weather forecasts. This is a special notice to anyone planning to go to the numerous high school football games this evening.

If you haven’t been paying attention to the weather this morning, you need to be, especially from the city of Cincinnati to all points WEST. PLEASE know where you will go in the event of severe weather. Here are a couple tips:

  • Many high school stadiums have metal benches for seating. These ARE NOT SAFE in lightning because they can easily become a conduit. Evacuate them for a safer structure.
  • Follow directions of officials in the stadium and/or the press box. DO NOT PANIC…this can do more harm than good.
  • Don’t stand in the open, or near lighting poles. Once again, find a safer structure.
  • If all else fails in a non-severe thunderstorm, you would be safe in a hard-top vehicle. NO CONVERTIBLES.
  • If you are at all in doubt that you’d be safe going to the game, by all means do stay home. You are safer at home, than you are at a stadium that doesn’t have shelters.
  • If you have an iPhone, we would encourage that you download the iMap Weather Radio application. It is a $10 app but believe us — it’s worth it. It will alert you based on the warning polygon…if you’re in the polygon, you get the alert on your phone, and if you’re not you don’t. Check your favorite local media as well…most of them do have applications that have some warning capability.
  • We here at NKYWx will be on top of the storm situation all day, and will bring you the latest information as we get it.
