Thursday 1/24 PM Update: Some Snow Friday, Icy Early Monday?

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY areawide from 6 AM to 5 PM Friday…

TONIGHT: I expect dry skies, with temperatures down to around 18 degrees. This is the calm ahead of the storm.

FRIDAY: We will be dealing with a double-barrel storm, with low pressure both north and south of the area. The better dynamics will be closer to these two systems, and consequently the higher amounts will be in those areas. The lesser amounts appear to be in the metro area and points southwest. Even here, however, a higher snow to liquid ratio will bring amounts of 1 to 2 inches by Friday evening. Across areas from Hamilton to Wilmington to Maysville, Georgetown and West Union, you may see amounts of 3″. Highs on Friday struggle to the upper 20’s.

SATURDAY: We clear things out — but we also chill down a bit again! As I think there will at least be some snow cover on the ground at this point, I will go with 27 and a low Saturday night of 16.

SUNDAY/MONDAY: I don’t agree with the guidance on this one entirely. I do think Sunday is partly to mostly cloudy with a high close to freezing. However, Sunday evening precipitation moves in, and it should take the form of a wintry mixture of sleet, freezing rain and plain old rain before changing to the latter Monday. Because we will have precipitation around, I would expect highs in the lower 40’s and not the upper 40’s the guidance suggests. As we start the event, we will see lows in the upper 20’s, but it looks like there will be significant warm air advection so we’ll get above freezing sometime Monday morning. Stay tuned on this one…we are far from knowing exact impacts.

TUESDAY: I don’t know if we close in on 60, but certainly low to mid 50’s are possible as we should be rid of any snow cover. However, we will also have rain around the area as well.

NEXT UPDATE: There may be a special update here on the blog later this evening — if I do, it will be once the evening models are in at 11 PM, but there will DEFINITELY be the normal update before 7 AM tomorrow. Until then, take care!
